Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning youth are almost 5 times more likely to attempt suicide. Women are 3 times more likely than men to attempt suicide, and men are 3.5 times more likely to have a fatal outcome when attempting suicide.
Warning signs that someone may be at risk include but are not limited to Talking about wanting to die or kill oneself.Looking for a way to kill.Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live.Talking about feeling trapped or being in unbearable pain.Talking about being a burden to others.Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs.Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly.Sleeping too little or too much.Withdrawing or feeling isolated.Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge and displaying extreme mood swings
If you suspect a someone is at risk of taking their own life the best action to take is to call 911.Ask the person if they are thinking about killing themselves.You could also stay with the person and monitor their behaviors.If you suspect they will take action remove any objects that could potentially help them do so.
